This 1/4" biothane slip collar is exactly what you are looking for in a slip collar.  The simplicity of the design is using the looped ends to administer a good grip and hold when engaged due to the rubber against rubber instead of using a metal ring that may be too slick at times. Also still being able to disengage right when the tension is released. It will help the communication with you and your companion. The thickness and shape also plays a huge part. Some times being too thick or a flat style slip collar or slip lead will not have the same effectiveness as this 1/4" rope biothane or the basic nylon design. We have sewn and crimped the loop ends so failure is not an option.
